    Self-Matching Properties of Beatty Sequences

    Get PDF
We study the selfmatching properties of Beatty sequences, in particular of the graph of the function jβ\lfloor j\beta\rfloor against jj for every quadratic unit β(0,1)\beta\in(0,1). We show that translation in the argument by an element GiG_i of generalized Fibonacci sequence causes almost always the translation of the value of function by Gi1G_{i-1}. More precisely, for fixed iNi\in\N, we have β(j+Gi)=βj+Gi1\bigl\lfloor \beta(j+G_i)\bigr\rfloor = \lfloor \beta j\rfloor +G_{i-1}, where jUij\notin U_i. We determine the set UiU_i of mismatches and show that it has a low frequency, namely βi\beta^i.Comment: 7 page

Pelagic metabolism of the Scheldt estuary measured by the oxygen method on an annual scale

Pelagic gross primary production (GPP), community respiration (CR) and nitrification were measured in the turbid Scheldt Estuary by the oxygen Winkler method from January to December 2003 at monthly intervals (EUROTROPH EU project). Five stations along the estuary were investigated, corresponding to a salinity (S) range of 0-25. Water was sampled and incubated until sunset in 60 ml glass bottles stored in a 5 compartment incubator kept at in situ temperature by flowing water. Irradiance was controlled in each compartment by filters having a shading capacity ranging from 0 to 100%. In order to estimate the oxygen consumption due to the respiration and nitrification processes, samples were incubated, in the dark compartment, with and without addition of nitrification inhibitors. Net community production (NCP) was most of the time negative in the estuary with values ranging from -275 to +31mmol O2.m-2.d-1 and the lowest values were found near Antwerp (S = 2). Strong pelagic GPP and positive NCP rates were observed in the freshwater part during summer with a maximal value in June (+373mmol O2.m-2.d-1), corresponding to an increase of the O2 concentration and a decrease of the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the water column during this period. Nitrification contributes 5 to 60% of the oxygen consumption in the water column with highest values measured in the inner part of the estuary due to high ammonium and suspended matter concentrations. Assuming a C/O2 molar ratio of 0.07, we estimated that nitrification represents on an annual scale 35% of organic matter production at salinity 2 which is consistent with previous estimates. NCP rates measured in 2003 are among the lowest reported in the literature and confirm the strong heterotrophic status of the Scheldt Estuary

Observation of superspin glass state in magnetically textured ferrofluid (gamma-Fe2O3)

    Get PDF
Magnetic properties in a magnetically textured ferrofluid made out of interacting maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) nanoparticles suspended in glycerin have been investigated. Despite the loss of uniform distribution of anisotropy axes, a superspin glass state exists at low temperature in a concentrated, textured ferrofluid as in the case of its non-textured counterpart. The onset of superspin glass state was verified from the sample's AC susceptibility. The influence of the anisotropy axis orientation on the aging behavior in the glassy states is also discussed

A MACROSCOPIC MODEL OF THE THERMO-CHEMO-MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF MIXED IONIC AND ELECTRONIC CONDUCTORS

International audienceThis paper suggests a macroscopic model describing the thermo-chemo-mechanical behaviour of ceramic dense membrane for oxygen separation application. This work takes in account to oxygen permeation and strain induced by stoichiometry variation with working conditions. This model, developed within the traditional framework of phenomenological approach, is based on the assumption of strain partitions and requires only three state variables: oxygen activity, temperature and total strain. Oxygen bulk diffusion and surface exchanges are described thanks to the thermodynamic approach developed by Onsager. While many works focused on semi-permeation induced strain, the proposed model also includes the temperature effect on chemical expansion. Strains predicted by the proposed model are validated thanks to experimental test on La0.8Sr0.2Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-δ. Implemented in F.E.A code Abaqus, this model permits studying the design and the process management effects such as chemical shocks on the membrane reliability

Mapping England\u27s Trade Through Depictions in English Emblems.

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the growing interaction between England and foreign countries comparing their trade with contemporary later sixteenth century and seventeenth century English emblems. The emblems used are those available over the internet from several different library and university sources. As England expanded its trade throughout the world, English emblems began to show the exchange occurring between England and its various trading partners. Historians have largely overlooked this valuable source of information. By studying emblems historians gain invaluable insight into the economy, society, politics, religion, and other matters with which England was concerned

ROTATIONALLY-RESOLVED INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY OF THE _16 BAND OF 1,3,5-TRIOXANE

1,3,5-trioxane is the simplest cyclic form of polyoxymethylene (POM), a class of formaldehyde polymers that has been proposed as the origin of distributed formaldehyde formation in comet comae and a potential source of formaldehyde in prebiotic chemistry. Although claimed POM detections have since been proven to be inconclusive, laboratory simulations of cometary conditions have yielded trioxane and other POMsfootnote{Cottin, H., Bホnilan, Y., Gazeau, M-C., and Raulin, F. Origin of Cometary Extended Sources from Degradation of Refractory Organics on Grains: Polyoxymethylene as Formaldehyde Parent Molecule. textit{Icarus} textbf{167} (2004), 397-416.}. While the microwave spectrum of 1,3,5-trioxane has been studied extensivelyfootnote{Oka, T., Tsuchiya, K., Iwata, S., and Morino, Y. Microwave Spectrum of s-Trioxane. textit{Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn.} textbf{37} (1964), 4-7.}, to date only one rotationally-resolved ro-vibrational spectrum has been publishedfootnote{Henninot, J-F., Bolvin, H., Demaison, J., and Lemoine, B. The Infrared Spectrum of Trioxane in a Supersonic Slit Jet. textit{J. Mol. Spect.} textbf{152} (1992), 62-68.}. Here, we present our studies of the nub{16} band of gas-phase trioxane centered at 1177 wn. Trioxane was entrained in a supersonic expansion of argon and characterized by continuous-wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy using an etalon-stabilized external-cavity quantum cascade laserfootnote{Gibson, B.M. and McCall, B.J., contribution TJ08, presented at the 69th^{th} International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Urbana, IL, USA, 2014.}. Rotationally resolved spectra were obtained with less than 15 MHz resolution
